Civil Initiative for the Family and the Rights of the Child

Objectives:

  1. Preservation of a marriage that would be legally defined as a community of a man and a woman, with a purpose to raise a family.
  2. Preservation of a family as a community of father, mother and children, which enjoys a special protection for the benefits of the children.
  3. Respect of the children’s rights to be accepted in a foster care or adopted into a community of a man and a woman.
  4. Governmental help for families in Slovenia, especially for those facing poverty due to financial crisis.

Why is the family a community of a man, a woman and children?

  • A relationship of a man and a woman is the only one that enables survival. It is the most natural form of cohabitation.
  • A family of mother and father gives children the most suitable surroundings for their holistic development. According to psychology and psychoanalysis children need a mother and a father for a healthy development.

Why our NO to homosexual marriages and adoption?

  • With the equalization of the homosexual partnership and marriage, marriage becomes devaluated because one of its most important dimensions is taken away: conception and birth.
  • If homosexual marriages and classic marriages are treated equally, this implies discrimination of classic marriage and family.
  • Homosexuality is not yet thoroughly researched. Homosexual adoption rights would therefore represent a social experiment on children.
  • Children adopted by the homosexuals would be exposed to greater health and social risks (e.g., violence, divorces among gays and lesbians are far more common, e.g. among gays 50% and among lesbians 167% more common than among heterosexuals).
  • It is a right of a child who lost their parents to be adopted into a healthy family. Questioning the rights of couples (either heterosexual or homosexual) is therefore not appropriate in this context because a child is not a right and not an object.

Why is the current legal proposal not suitable?

  • Proposed changes on the redefinition of marriage are neither legally founded nor sufficiently supported with the researches and analysis.
  • A proposed equalization of a homosexual partnership with the heterosexual one represents an extraordinarily irresponsible decision at a time when Slovenia is confronted with an extremely low fertility rate.
  • The right of homosexuals to the equalised marriage has no basis in any of the binding international document on human rights.
  • According to the European Court of Human Rights it is not discriminatory that a marriage and a homosexual partnership do not have the same rights and obligations.
